Jewelweed Salve is made with moisturizing Extra Virgin Olive Oil that has been infused with the flowers, leaves, stems, and scrubbed roots of wildcrafted jewelweed. It is combined with amazing skin-nurturing Tamanu Oil. The properties of Tamanu Oil promote wellness and ease skin discomfort.
The beautiful Jewelweed plant with it’s orange blossoms & touch-me-not seed pods is a natural herbal preparation to cool and moisten poison ivy rash. It works just as well for any other itchy skin conditions you might suffer from! We harvest jewelweed annually late summer on our farm. From the plant we prepare the juice, oil infusions, and dehydrate the leaves. These are all used our in herbal salves and farm soaps.
We harvest all of the jewelweed plants by hand. Plenty of plants are left behind to continue to grow and spread. The children happily come along behind me, exploding the seed capsules with the touch of a fingertip. The seeds are spread all over helping the population to thrive.
Jewelweed Salve may be used on poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac. It may also be helpful for bug bites and stings, contact with stinging nettle, dermatitis, and other itchy skin conditions.
Benefits of Jewelweed
The Jewelweed plant (also known as Touch-Me-Not) contains lawsone, an antihistamine and antifungal and balsaminones which help control the itch. Lawsone works to combat the itching because it binds to the same molecular site as the urushiol in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. Because of this, Jewelweed is effective in combatting the discomfort caused by urushiol, the oil in poison ivy that causes the itchy rash. The sooner you use jewelweed the faster and better it works! In fact, you can use jewelweed on your skin before going into the woods to prevent the rash in the first place.
